Meeting members of the senior management team, she talked to them about some of the elements of the European Commission's policy papers launched in early January under the heading of Common Energy Policy. The Commission said at the launch that it would not be in Europe's interests to stop burning coal, because this would increase dependence on imported energy (which is likely to account for two-thirds of the total by 2030 on current trends). The Commission has called for the use of clean coal technology and the capture and storage of CO2 from coal-fired plants.
Diana also went on a tour of Drax which is the largest coal-fired power station in the UK.
