Lib Dem Euro MP gives support to Charles Kennedy over 'honest admission' on drinking problem

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 5th Jan 2006

Commenting on the Leader of the Liberal Democrats Charles Kennedy's personal statement this evening on the drink problem that he is seeking to overcome, the region's Lib Dem Euro MP Diana Wallis said:

"This is an honest admission by Charles. It is sad yet brave to make such a public statement, but he needs space to sort this out in his own way.

"As for the leadership he has clearly been hugely successful at the head of the Liberal Democrats, taking us to electoral success at a level we have never known before and I have no doubt this is, and indeed will be, recognised by the party membership as a whole should it go to a vote."
