Diana Wallis MEP opened the preview of a showcase exhibition featuring work by a selection of artists taking part in the first North Yorkshire Open Studios event. The preview was held at the Granary, Skipton Castle, Friday May 20th.
The aim of the whole project is to promote the wealth of artistic talent that exists in North Yorkshire, to offer people the opportunity to meet over one hundred professional artists and makers, see where and how their work is produced and buy from them direct. It does this by way of a series of routes, or tours. set out in the Open Studios brochure directing tourists or interested buyers to exhibitions and artists homes around North Yorkshire.
As part of her formal opening of the event, Diana Wallis said:
"I think that we would all agree on the wish to maximise North Yorkshire's cultural reach and offer."
"One of the countries I have a lot o do with outside the EU is Iceland. Here is small island with a population about the same as Hull and so is significantly smaller then North Yorkshire, but people are living in similarly isolated circumstances. Yet here is a country, now a popular tourist destination, with a rich and varied cultural scene. "
"As tourists to faraway places like Iceland we automatically look afresh at landscapes, art, architecture, culture and literature because such things are different. However equally we find new things which stimulate our senses and thoughts closer to home. Why therefore should North Yorkshire not make a similar mark when we, or others, from near or far, begin to look through fresh eyes at different perspectives and designs we have on offer here. The open studio route book will certainly be in my car as a guide around Yorkshire in the coming months."
